The (AI)rish Series: Will AI Change Our Past?

Join the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society at the University of Notre Dame for The (AI)rish Series – a series dedicated to exploring responsible, inclusive, safe, and ethical (R.I.S.E.) AI research and tackling some of society’s vexing challenges.

During this series event, join Lucy Family Institute associate research professor Nuno Moniz as he discusses the impact of AI on our understanding and perception of our own history due to the effects of AI.

Abstract: Until recently, humans were the only ones who both wrote and consumed history. That is no longer true. Although mostly unnoticed, AI-based chatbots are now our companions in that fundamental pillar of societal organization, providing millions of users with information that may range from slightly to significantly different from primary sources and our own memories. The implications at a societal level are far from understood or addressed. Simply put: we are not prepared. With this in mind, for the past year, I’ve led an international team of philosophers, memory study scholars, historians and computer scientists, from the University of Notre Dame (USA), the Catholic University of Croatia, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and KU Leuven (Belgium), to understand how modern chatbots portray significant historical events. Our work points towards the urgent need to prepare for greater challenges in education, cultural heritage preservation, information literacy, and even cognitive warfare defense. Without immediate action, we risk a future where historical understanding becomes increasingly detached from truth.
